Melendy Avenue Review 2023-06-30
Hello! I’m still working on that project. Have a podcast and an election!
ELECTION
Which work of Serious Nonfiction should I read next?
Farrell Dobbs, “Teamster Power” (1973) - Legendary Trotskyist teamster organizer Farrell Dobbs continues his story of the rise and decline of the Minneapolis teamsters. They won their general strike by expanding the site of struggle and using the strategic terrain of transportation as leverage. But what comes after?
William Everdell, “The Evangelical Counter-Enlightenment: From Ecstasy to Fundamentalism in Christianity, Judaism, and Islam in the 18th Century” (2021) - I do enjoy some comparative history! This one looks at ecstatic reform movements in Abrahamic religions during the enlightenment period, most of which turned pretty explicitly counter-enlightenment.
Max Ubelaker Andrade, “Borges Beyond the Visible” (2019) - Some criticism! The great Argentine writer, one of my favorites (and we have the same birthday!) knew from childhood that he would go blind one day due to congenital eye problems. How did this manifest into his writing?
I’m also on a trip. I plan on having fun, but, I’ll be happy to be up close with Mithra when I return!
